Eleryn looked around, surprised she couldn't see who was talking. It sounded so close. "I-- " Randir snorted which brought her back to her senses. "I think I am alright for the moment, but if you'd like, you could walk with me. I would feel better if I could see you, however..." she added. There was something familiar in the voice, and it was beginning to bother her. But at the same time, she was too tired to care.
What about Menel, it could be one of her's. she thought quickly, but her merciful side told her that it could just be a lonely traveler like Dernwine.

Eleryn jumped, being startled. The hair on the back of her neck prickled as she turned to try and see who was talking.
"Who are you?" she asked, trying to ignore the temptation of following whoever was talking. It sounded nice though. Sleep at this point was what she wanted, but her training refused to allow her to.

Randir stopped and flattened his ears, and Eleryn imediately knew she wasn't alone. Try as she might, however, she could not hear anything, and the trees coupled with the rain hindered her sight even more.
To feel more comfortable, she took out one of her long knives and held it close to her side. Her hood was down so you could see the rain drip off of her hair and face. It was also obvious that she was nervous.

Eleryn allowed Randir to get close to the camp, but not too close. Just close enough to see what was happening.
Only Menel was at the camp, standing and staring at something. It felt like there was another person, maybe even two, hiding somewhere in the shadows. She slowed Randir to walk when they entered the little forest, and watched for anything that could be hiding and in league with Menel.

A particularly loud clap of thunder woke Eleryn with a start. Randir was drenched, but showed no signs that he cared too much. He was looking towards the camp they had left only an hour or so ago.
"It's alright now, we left her." she said quietly, standing to rub his nose. He continued to look towards the camp, and neighed nervously. "What is it?" she asked, looking in the same direction. She strained her eyes to try and make out even Menel, but the unceasing rain and the dark of the night kept her and her camp cloaked and out of sight.
There is more than just Menel and Dernwine now she thought to herself. She mounted Randir and he took off, heading to run past the camp to see what was going on and to get away at the same time.

Randir begins to gallop at the bottom of the hill, Eleryn still trying to think. Never trust the enemy is rule number one. she thought to herself. I just need some sleep...
She tried to get the picture of Menel acting like a regular elf out of her mind. "She is the enemy." she said quietly. Randir neighed in reply, and slowed down until he stopped. They were far enough away that it was safe. Eleryn laid down beside a boulder and tried to sleep, Randir standing over her and blocking some of the rain and wind.

Eleryn smiles slightly, and bows. "May the Valar be with you as well." she says, and mounts Randir. "I hope you understand." she adds, and Randir starts down the hill. Eleryn doesn't turn and look back, just stares ahead of her.

Eleryn stops and turns around. She hesitates for a moment, then speaks quietly.
"Do you really mean that?" she asks, trying to catch a glimpse of Menel's eyes in the dark. Randir neighs quietly, confused as to why Eleryn hasn't mounted yet.

Eleryn tried to look away from Menel, but couldn't bring herself to. As soon as I do she will strike. she thinks to herself as Randir trots up. His ears flatten, but he doesn't move, just stands beside Eleryn, occasionally looking down as if to plead with her to leave.
Eleryn rubbed his side and kept looking at Menel. It was worse now that she couldn't see her eyes. She pulled her now useless hood up out of habit and sat still.
"Maybe I should just leave, it would make things easier." she finally says after moments of silence. Her hair is wet and plastered to her face when she pulls the hood off. She begins to stand, finally taking her eyes off of the enemy.

Eleryn sees the storm coming. Great, now there is no escape... she thinks to herself. She politely refuses the drink and pulls her own canteen out.
Randir neighs rather loudly, and Eleryn looks down. He knows it is going to storm and wants to leave.
What am I doing here? She looks across the fire, which starts to hiss as it starts to rain. Half of her wants to grab her bow and just kill her, but the other is already feeling bad for hating someone who was just trying to get by. She kills without a second thought, you saw it yourself she thinks. Then why isn't she trying to kill me right now? It is now very obvious, despite how she tries to hide it, that she is confused.

Now what? she asked, thinking to herself. She was tired of the small talk. What would Mirkwood think of her talking calmly with the enemy?
Of course, at least she could talk with the enemy. But did she want to know that Menel was only an elf like her? It was easier to think that she wasn't, that she was pure evil. How do you know she isn't plotting to make the first move to kill now? Or what if she is simply looking for a place to stay, just like you?
Eleryn tried to think of something else. They used to tell me I was too merciful to be a captain, and here I am proving them right. she thought angrily. By now it was getting obvious that she was uncomfortable. She was fighting with herself, at war in her mind.
But of course, Eleryn was always up to giving people second chances, and as much as she didn't want to, she found that the more time she spent with Menel, the more she was finding that at least for a time, Menel was civilized and not constantly bent on killing and betraying. There was of course, the nagging suspision that maybe she was, and the indecisiveness was confusing her.

Eleryn finished her meal and looked up. Of course you would like to know... she thought. She hesitated for a minute before answering.
"I guess you could call it that." she said simply. She looked back to where Randir was, he was still standing just out of the fire's light, waiting to leave.
"Are you vacationing as well?" she asked after more awkward silence.

Eleryn watches the embers fly up into the night sky and disapear. Passing through, when does Menel ever simply pass through anything? she thought to herself, but scolded herself. No need to jump to conclusions yet.
"So am I." she said simply.
"Want anything to eat?" she asked, taking out some salted meat, bread, an apple. She began to eat some, drinking water through her canteen as she did. It was weird sitting so close, trying to act nice toward your enemy. It almost made her feel bad for ever being mean, almost. Instead she remembered the faces of the elves that had died at Menel's hand, and it was all she could do to not drop her food and charge at the murderer. She didn't, just sat and ate her food. There was no way she could stay the night, not unless she didn't sleep.

Eleryn watched Dernwine leave, and slowly turned around to face Menel. She was brushing her horse. Suddenly she wished she hadn't stopped, that she had kept riding. It was hard when you knew that the person in front of her was allowed to walk freely in Middle Earth, and only be banned from Mirkwood.
It was silent, and rather awkward. Since Menel wasn't doing anything evil, there was no reason to try and kill her. She decided to try and talk.
"So what brings you to Rohan?" she asks politely. She even manages to not sound like she is mocking her either. As long as there is no reason to fight, might as well make conversation. But what does one say to their enemy?

Eleryn sat and watched her every move, holding back the erge to grab her bow and be rid of them both. She did well though, and managed to just sit silently. After all, she did allow her to share the campfire, only to get information and then finish you off she thought to herself.
She shook her head and tried to think of something else. She watched the fire, turned and looked down at Randir, who was ready to ride off at any minute, looked at the stars, and finally back to the horse and rider in front of her.
Maybe she has changed she thought hopefully. She didn't entirely believe it, but it was something to think about.
